New York City is a paradise for tourists. However, for its residents it can be a nightmare. The article “New York’s crime wave is showing signs of breaking”(1) shows the great concerns about crime in the city. The author of this is Justin Fox and does not reflect the opinion of the editorial board. The author is very concerned and scared by the insecurity that exists in New York City today. His concern is displayed throughout the entire article. This can be seen through the opinions that the author speaks of possible causes of the increase in crime in the city. The genre of this article is a magazine editorial. The author shows us with data the increase that has occurred in recent years in crime in NYC. Also, he criticizes the possible causes for which crimes have increased. Mainly to the law for leaving criminals free. This article is credible as it is based on evidence and reports about the DEA. The author’s purpose is to inform New Yorkers that crime is increasing more and more in the city and we don’t know the reason yet. Finally, the author’s position on this issue is worrying, seeing that no action is yet taken on the matter and the laws are increasingly unprotected every day.
The pandemic is not the only problem facing New York City today. The insecurity in public transport makes new yorkers not want to leave their homes to take risks. In the article”Subways are less busy and less safe” by Amanda Rosa (2) shows the great danger that New Yorkers run on their day to day. This is a newspaper editorial that focuses on facts, it does not express any opinion. The author shows us with facts and testimonies of some residents of the city how dangerous the situation is. Compared to the previous year, the chaos of abuses and homicides on the train. have increased. People no longer feel safe transporting from one place to another. After a long day at work, the tranquility of home is the best way to rest. Unfortunately, this is not the case in New York City public housing. In the article “At NYCHA’s most dangerous development, tenants wonder: Is the city doing enough?” by an unknown author (3) talks about the chilling things that happen today in public housing in the city. The genre of this article is a Magazine editorial. In public housing, homicides occur that have not yet been resolved. Many of these are cases that have happened years ago. The author uses as a reference to people residing in these places and narrates the testimonies of him. Although the author is unknown, we can trust what he tells us since he uses images and testimony to support what he says. All that is discussed in the article are facts and not opinions. The tone used by the author is one of concern. This can be seen when he emphasizes that one of the witnesses did not answer the question whether cameras should be placed in these public housing buildings. The audience of this article are New Yorkers to help them realize that it is not safe to live in government buildings. Youth is the future of the country. However, compared to other times, the youth has gotten out of control. The article “Hard times as NYC soft on crime, doomed by reforms”(4) by Bob Mc manus, tells us about how crimes have increased more recently because of gangs. The genre of this article is an editorial opinion. These gangs are mostly made up of youth. In recent years, youth deaths are due to gang confrontations. The author’s tone is hopeless. This can be shown when it says “America’s cities are awash in them; nothing is going to change that.” The author feels that there is no hope that the city will return to the way it was before. However, this author is not credible as he is basing himself on his personal opinions and not on facts. We have no proof that what the author tells us is true. In addition, the audience of this article are the parents of young New Yorkers to urge their children to contribute well to society. The author’sstance is that if the parents and the government do nothing, New York will not be prosperous.
The danger of crime in New York City is increasing every day. In each of these articles we realized that in some way the authors try to draw the attention of the government to help in the situation. The authors think that the government knows everything that is going on and does nothing to improve it. Each of the articles has a different tone. It’s interesting to see that even though all three speak to the downside of the city, it only shows hope for the New Yorkers. Finally, all the authors try to raise the voice of citizens through articles to have a better life in the city.
